A couple have become the first in Britain to use a controversial screening technique to create a baby free of a rare and potentially life-threatening genetic disorder.
Tracey Hobbs and Peter Wills were so concerned that their offspring might be affected by a hereditary condition that has blighted Mr Wills's family that they had decided not to try for children. Then they received Health Service funding for a £7,000 procedure which ensures that faulty genes which cause the disease are eliminated.
